This gemstone dates back to ancient Egypt at the time of the Pharaohs, and can be found in their amazing jewellery. In fact, this variety of gem-quality olivine as it is known, has been mined for over 3,500 years. For ancient Mediterranean civilisations, the island now known as St John's Island was the main source of peridot. The island is in the Red Sea and was previously named Zabargad, which means olivine in Arabic. The name "peridot" is French, and maybe derived from the word "faridat", which is an Arabic word meaning "gem".
Peridot is always green, but it can range from a pale pretty golden green to a much darker almost olive brown colour. The shade of green is due to the presence of iron within the gemstone, a higher presence of iron can result in a brown hue, but the most valued colour for peridot stones are those of a rich green.
