The Future is Bright the Future is Purple!

The Future is Bright the Future is Purple!

Published by Charlotte Gatward on 13th Jan 2022

As we usher in the start of 2022, we have a lot of reasons to feel cheerful here at Gatwards. When we reflect on where we were this time last year, the shop was closed and did not open again until mid-April. We were operating on a click and collect basis and taking in repairs in our new workshop.

From Face to Face to Online in 2020-21

Gatwards is a traditional bricks and mortar “face to face” business but the pandemic really catapulted us into having a credible online presence where we could be here for our customers virtually as well as in person and we are grateful for that. We felt very lucky to be able to operate at all when many other businesses were closed completely but like all retailers, we couldn’t wait to re-open again to see our customers in-store and do what we do best.

Baume et Mercier arrives in-store

In 2022, we have exciting plans ahead of us. Just before Christmas, we launched a new watch brand, Baume et Mercier and now all the new watches have arrived in-store. The Baume et Mercier story began in 1830 when brothers Louis-Victor and Célestin opened a watch dealership in Les Bois, a village in the Swiss Jura. The business grew and true to their motto, “accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality”, they forged a fine reputation through the creation of exceptional timepieces featuring the latest innovations. We feel the brand has many synergies with the Gatward obsession with quality and are delighted to have them on board.

Our favourite is the art-deco inspired elegance of the Hampton range with its distinctive rectangular face.

Marco Bicego Launch

On the theme of quality and luxury, we will soon be launching a new gold jewellery brand, Marco Bicego in the spring and we can’t wait to invite you to an in-store event to browse the new collections. A true icon of Italian craftsmanship, Marco’s creations are inspired by the organic forms of Nature, by the beauty of 18ct yellow gold and by precious colourful gemstones. Every piece is hand-crafted in Italy using their in-house engraving and “coil” techniques and is simply stunning. Our top pick for this Spring and Summer will most definitely be an iconic Marco Bicego necklace from the Jaipur colour range with a rainbow of coloured gemstones set in 18ct yellow gold.

Workshop Wonders

Our workshop continues to go from strength to strength with the genius that is Stephen our Goldsmith at the helm. Our repairs business has grown over the past 12 months and now that we are able to carry out jewellery repairs and re-modelling work on site, we can complete work much faster than before. If you have a piece of jewellery that you would like to be assessed for repair or to be remodelled into something new, please bring it in, we would be only too happy to help.

Platinum Jubilee

In June, the Queen’s platinum jubilee will be an important event in the calendar to be commemorated here at Gatwards just as her other 6 jubilees have been in the past. We are honoured to feature in the commemorative book that will be presented to the Queen and Gatwards will be involved in the celebrations which will be taking place throughout Hitchin over the jubilee weekend.

The theme colour for the platinum jubilee is purple and of course, the eagle-eyed among you may recall the Queen wore a lavender coloured dress when she visited Hitchin in 2012 as part of her diamond jubilee celebrations as a nod to the lavender fields that Hitchin is well known for. We think purple will therefore be the colour to be seen in this year – think amethysts, purple sapphires, ametrine and even iolite in your jewellery pieces for the year ahead.

The Gatward-commissioned Platinum Jubilee Piece

There will also be a Gatward commissioned ring which is being designed by a British designer as we speak to commemorate the platinum jubilee. It will be a unique piece involving diamonds, platinum and incorporating a purple element and will be available for purchase ahead of the jubilee celebrations. We are looking forward to the great unveiling both in-store and online when it has been created.

We hope that whatever you have planned for the year ahead, you too can look forward to some more normality returning in 2022. We feel confident that there will not be any further closures of Gatwards in the near future and we will be here to welcome you with open arms to help put the sparkle into your 2022.
